Did Jesus Abolish The Law? Matt.5:17
Did Jesus come to abolish the law, or to fulfill it? In this episode of Truth Talk, we walk through the three great law codes of the Old Testament, the Holiness Code of Leviticus 17–26, and Jesus' words in Matthew 5:17: "I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill."
We look at the difference between abrogation and supersession, why Jesus magnified the law instead of loosening it (Matthew 5), what the Hebrew concept of halakha ("the way") means, and why the Gospel of John presents Jesus as the Word, the Creator of Scripture, with authority to speak over the law. Then we look at a viral clip of a pastor announcing a second wife to his church and ask what Scripture says about elder qualifications and who gets to change the Word of God.
